HomeMINES and CHARGESEUROPEItaly

a. Characteristics
The B4, which is the principal Italian antipersonnel mine, is a shrapnel mine which scatters scrap metal when detonated. Since the mine does not have the "jack-in-the-box" effect of the British and German types, it is generally fixed to a tree or a post.
However, there have been instances in which B4's have been buried in the ground. The B4 is fired by trip wires or tension release.

b. To Neutralize
(1) Insert a nail or a stout wire into the safetypin hole in the striker.
(2) Pull out the cap holder.
(3) Cut the tension wire and trip wires after checking the other ends for booby traps.
